Have we ever thought why engineers wear special suits when working on spacecraft missions? Most of us think those fancy white suits of the astronauts help them to breathe or perform some function on the alien planet. It’s not just a uniform the reason is different and more fundamental and important!
So Planetary Protection is the reason behind these suits. Planetary Protection is a guiding principle to define the rules of engagement in the design of an interplanetary mission. Basically it is to prevent biological contamination or any other kind of disruption due to extraterrestrial adventures.
There are two types of interplanetary contamination. Forward contamination is the transfer of viable organisms from earth to another celestial body. Back contamination is the transfer of extraterrestrial organisms.
When planning a space mission, cross-contamination and its counteracting measures are one of the biggest issues besides the development of craft, If such things happen we missed the chance forever to know if life already existed on this planet or we sent human from our planet. Due to this reason, NASA is making efforts to ensure that this interplanetary contamination is avoided.
If we accidentally produce life where it didn’t exist before, this could disturb the ecosystem. We may also stamp out living creatures on the planet by sending some dirty probes in the space.
So to avoid this situation when human land on another planet, take an example of mars, ‘How we avoid this situation when human land on Mars’?. So, the only possible answer is already we found the presence of life on Mars. So, cross-contamination is not a big issue here, they will still take precautions to avoid unbalance of nature on the planet. This suits of the exploration teams are sterilized before leaving their habitat. Any material found and collect on the planet is sealed in sterilized containers before bringing them inside.
Scientists and astronauts wear suits in clean rooms while experimenting and designing the space mission on earth. These suits designed such that they have low particle count in the air. Otherwise, it may mess up the experiments and equipment, thus endanger the entire mission.
