World’s Longest Sea-Crossing Bridge

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge. It connects mainland China to Hong Kong. This bridge is 55-kilometer long and cost about $20 billion. It took 9 years to construct and designed to last for 120 years.

The structure of this bridge is consists of three cable-stayed bridges, an undersea tunnel, and four artificial islands. More than 400,000 tons of steel used for reinforcement of the bridge, If you compare it with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge then by comparison that’s 4.5 times the amount of steel used in Golden Bridge, according to Travel Wire Asia.

This bridge will be reduced travel time between its three terminal locations along the Pearl River Delta – Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao – from 3 hours to 30 minutes. The bridge has been engineered to withstand earthquakes, typhoons, and run-ins with shipping vessels.

The bridge consists of four artificial islands and was built in shallow waters to buoy the bridge’s crossing. Two of islands are used for the entrance and exits of 6-7 kilometer tunnel through which drivers can travel undersea busiest shipping lane.
